Watford charities adjust to the new world order

EuroAs 2012 approaches, the world is changing profoundly and permanently. We hope the Euro crisis is soon resolved but it will take rather longer to get to grips with the debt crisis; and in the overall confusion, global leaders seem to have forgotten about climate change.

Watford Borough council is now agreeing cuts in voluntary sector funding. Our survey of local charities shows that in 2010 Watford’s charities experienced a contraction in income for the first time in five years. Most observers believe that for charities and community groups 2011 will be worse than 2010 - and 2012 will be worse still. You can help by giving more and by giving more intelligently – use Gift Aid to make sure charities fully benefit from your donation. For advice on how, please contact Watford CVS on 01923 216950.

Watford CVS is reviewing its own plans for the future and we will be issuing a consultation document during December.

 Volunteering Role of the Month

Health Walk Leader

CMS Health Walk.jpg
The Countryside Management Service organise and promote health walks across Hertfordshire. All walks are led by volunteers who help others to enjoy the countryside and get healthy at the same time. New walk leaders are always needed! There are different walks for all abilities including those with minor mobility difficulties. Two groups walk in Cassiobury Park each Wednesday morning.

Volunteer health walk leaders:

  • meet lots of new people - and new friendships often result;
  • improve their health – and help others improve theirs;
  • do their bit for the environment by promoting an interest in the natural environment.
Volunteer health walk leader attend a (free!) one day accredited training course, and the next training session runs on 23rd January in South Oxhey (see contact details below for more information). Typically, vounteers then begin as assistant to an experienced walk leader until they're confident enough to lead their own group.
People volunteer for a few hours a week or for just one hour a month - whatever time you give will be really appreciated. Healthwalks also welcome volunteers to help promote walks in the community, develop programmes and carry out administrative tasks.

What?
Headway is a charity working across Hertfordshire to support people affected by brain injury. Headway have a Watford based group and are keen to find volunteers to help.

Why?
Brain injury can be caused by an accident, an assault, as a result of a stroke, a heart attack or sometimes because of a brain tumour. Whatever the cause, the injury can effect memory , mood and emotions, speech and communications, balance and coordination, cognition and understanding and personality.

Headway offer resources on brain injury, home visits to talk through available support, programmes to help people back to work or into volunteering and tailored support according to each person's needs and goals. There is also a welcoming environment where staff and volunteers organise coffee mornings and outings for the whole family.

Headway also offer services to carers including a course on brain injury especially for carers, a support network, respite and social outings, lunches and trips.

In Watford, Headway offer:

  • a fortnightly programme specifically designed for people with a brain injury including a range of cognitive activities;
  • home visits for support and assessments;
  • tutor-led discussion groups;
  • information, advice and guidance;
  • social activities;
  • volunteering opportunities.

Why now?

In the in the new year, Headway plan to start a regular weekly coffee morning in Watford - everyone welcome!

Want to get involved?

Headway are looking for Group Support Worker volunteers to assist in running the groups for people using their service. If anyone has any special interest or skill that could be offered to the group (for example a musical interest or craft interest) Headway would welcome your contact too!
